Rent receipts and HRA: how to claim house rent allowance

Money · 2 min read · Updated

If you get house rent allowance (HRA) from your employer, part of it can be tax-exempt under the old tax regime. Rent receipts and your agreement are your proof.

How the exemption is worked out

The exempt HRA is the lowest of three amounts: the HRA you actually receive, your rent paid minus 10% of basic salary plus DA, and a fixed share (50% for metro cities, 40% otherwise) of basic salary plus DA. Which cities count as metro has changed over time, so check the current rules for your city. Our HRA calculator shows each of the three amounts.

What proof employers ask for

Employers usually want rent receipts for the months claimed, and sometimes a copy of the rent agreement. Receipts should show the tenant, the landlord, the amount, the month and the property address.

Landlord PAN

When yearly rent paid is above a threshold set by the tax authority, employers typically ask for the landlord's PAN. Check your employer's current rule, and make sure your landlord is willing to share it.

Paying the right way

Pay rent by bank transfer or UPI so there is a record. Cash rent is harder to prove and can raise questions.
